ICC stands with the Black members of our community
June 2, 2020
To our Muslim Community,
Within the past week, many of us have witnessed protests around the world in reaction to George Floyd’s horrific murder at the hands of police officers in Minneapolis, MN, USA. We have seen people come together, peacefully take to the streets with their pain and necessity for change, and desire for achieving a just world.
As tensions around the world continue to grow, it is our duty to unify as a community, to show our love and respect for one another and to not accept hatred for anyone around us. Being bystanders and silent only furthers the problem. Although Canada is a multicultural and diverse country, it does not mean Canadian people are immune to these toxic and harmful worldviews. We have a lot to work on as a collective, considering the recent death of Regis Korchinski-Paquet in Toronto.
We also are aware of the fact that racism is still present in many cultures that we come from, and we would like to remind you that we condemn such beliefs at all levels. If you have been subject to any form of racism from within our community, or if you would like to discuss methods of change the ICC can implement to make our community a better and safer place, please contact us. Racism is a deviation from Islam. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us that “there is no superiority for an Arab over a non-Arab, nor for a non-Arab over an Arab. Neither is the white superior over the black nor is the black superior over the white — except by piety.”
We stand with the Black members of our community because we stand with the side of justice and you should too regardless of your race. If racism affects one of us, then it affects all of us. We have to stand together in order to uplift each other. We stand in solidarity against all forms of racism, oppression, hate speech or discrimination. It is our duty as Muslims, to make sure the Black members of our community feel safe at all times and experience no discrimination.
Together we stand united.
